The Bright Moments Origin Story
One of my very favorite things to talk about with other entrepreneurs is how they came up with the business in the first place.
What was that idea, that motivation, that spark that pushed them to start a business?
Some people have this evolution of working in the corporate world and branching out. Some people come up with a genius, unique idea. And most of us just find that push to have the freedom and flexibility of creating our own thing.
Why do I want to hear those stories? Because that moment, when they tell the story of why, really becomes clear. It's the heart behind the business, behind the inspiration to start, what they did.
I have a similar story.
I was feeling a monotony in my schedule. I wasn't feeling inspired, I didn't feel creative, and I was just feeling I had this feeling: Is this really it is this all that I'm going to contribute? Is this all that I'm going to do?
I also felt a little guilty because when I first started Bright Moments, I was already running another business — a home daycare that I had started in 2012. I know it's wildly different from what I do now! When I started my daycare, it came from a need to be close to my children when they were little, something I hadn’t been able to have in the past. Plus, it provided some income to our family.
I threw myself into growing the daycare, but I also felt guilty because I wasn't using the education and the knowledge that I had about business, about technology, about the online world.
I really built it up and it was somewhat successful. But I just had that nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I was not fulfilling a potential, not using my talents the way that I should have been.
Thus began Bright Moments!
And like anything else, I researched and researched. What could someone with a marketing degree and a background in technology, office management, and project management skills do from home - so that I could still be flexible for my family and also provide an income?
There are lots of opportunities for volunteering for those types of things. But what I wanted was to have a business to where eventually our family could travel, and I could still run a business from wherever we were.
As kids get older, they have more needs outside of the home. And even if you are very remote or very conscious of having that home life and not a lot of extracurriculars, there's still a lot of flexibility that's needed. I knew that I wanted to be the person to provide that relationship for my kids.
A traditional 9 to 5 job just isn't for me.
When I started Bright Moments, it really was a lot of trial and error, talking to a lot of people. Networking was a huge piece to starting my small business and still is a huge part of my business today.
The process was understanding what business owners need, who I ideally wanted to work with, and then providing that service and doing a really good job.
That's the origin story of Bright Moments! Stay tuned for more information about the nuts and bolts of what I needed in order to scale my business from solopreneur, just me, to a team of six now.
